I fashion myself a raw smoothie expert, and I’d be lying if I said green smoothies didn’t excite me. Having said that, sometimes a recipe comes along that captures the essence of what a smoothie should be. In this case, it’s not a green smoothie recipe, it’s actually a not so green raw smoothie recipe that has my mouth watering! No. It’s a raw smoothie with a sweet twist that’s got me licking my lips. So, move over green smoothies. There’s a new Not So Green Raw Smoothie Recipe in town!
Smoothies come in a variety of flavors from the sweet to the savory. In order to stick with the healthiest of versions, I only buy organic ingredients, and I stay away from dairy products, supplements and sugars. Nothing bad in means nothing bad out. It is because of this high standard that I find this smoothie recipe so awesome. It uses beets as a sweetener!
Beets are Sweet!
As you probably already know, beets are naturally super-sweet. In addition, they are very good for the body. Beets are chock full of antioxidants that help protect the body from free radical damage. They promote all-around good health, and they even provide some anti-inflammatory benefits as well. In addition to all of this, eating beets also encourages the body’s own detoxification process. Knowing all of this, it’s hard to believe that beets aren’t a regular part of most people’s daily nutrition. I really feel this super food doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, but with this raw smoothie recipe, I hope to change that.
On a side note, this recipe calls for raw maca powder as an optional ingredient. If you don’t know what it is, it’s a powder ground from the maca root, which also offers several health benefits of its own. Maca root is known to increase energy, balance hormone levels and give the body a healthy boost.
