How to Use Pumpkins In Your Green Smoothies
The cold months of fall are here, and the holidays are going to be here before you know it. Now is the perfect time to experiment with using pumpkin in green smoothies, and pumpkins do make an excellent base for green smoothies. Some of the best flavors to blend pumpkin with include cinnamon, clove, vanilla, and ginger. Some fruits that you might want to try include apples, pears, carrots, and even sweet potatoes. In terms of leafy green vegetables, choose something that has a mild flavor, so that the pumpkin’s delicate flavor can take center stage.
When it comes to making green smoothies, you will have your choice of using raw pumpkin, cooked pumpkin, or canned pumpkin. Canned pumpkin is the most convenient to use, but it is not the most nutritious option. Personally, I prefer to use cooked pumpkin. If you do decide to use canned pumpkin, make sure that you are purchasing an organic brand. The canned pumpkin should not have any added sugars.
Another option you will have will be to dice your raw pumpkin and cook it before adding it to your green smoothies. Make sure that you allow it to chill thoroughly before adding it in the blender with your other ingredients. My preferred method of cooking pumpkin is to steam it. After removing the seeds, innards, and peel, the pumpkin should be cut into small pieces. Place it in a steamer for about 45 minutes or until it is nice and tender.
Many enthusiasts of green smoothies like to use raw pumpkin, but I personally think that cooked pumpkin has more flavor to it. Before using raw pumpkin, you are going to need to soak it in water for about 3-4 hours. The water helps to remove some of the starchiness from the pumpkin, and it also helps to break down the rind, so it is easier for your blender to pulverize.
When using pumpkin in greens smoothies, I generally try not to use more than one cup of pumpkin. If you use more than this, it can cause the flavor of the pumpkin to overwhelm your green smoothies.
Like I mentioned earlier, when making green smoothies with pumpkin in it, make sure that you choose mild flavored leafy green vegetables. Some excellent options for you to choose from include Romaine lettuce and baby spinach. Try to stay away from greens that are bitter.
