Radishes aren’t the ideal ingredient for green smoothies, but radish leaves are another story! When you choose to use radish leaves, which are often discarded without a second thought, in your green smoothies, you will be providing your body with an excellent source of calcium, iron, folate, and Vitamins A, C, and K, amongst many other vitamins and nutrients. The leaves are the most nutritious part of radishes!
How Much Radish Leaves Should You Use In Green Smoothies?
In general, I will throw a whole stalk of radish leaves into my green smoothies when I am making them. Usually, I will also add another handful of my favorite leafy green vegetables, like kale or baby spinach. While I don’t usually measure my ingredients, I would say that two cups of radish leaves would be more than enough.
Like I already mentioned, radish leaves are an excellent source of calcium. Two cups of radish leaves will provide you with 200 milligrams of calcium, which is 20% of your RDA of calcium. Similarly, radish leaves will also provide you with 280% of your RDA of Vitamin A and 173% of your RDA for Vitamin C. Radish leaves will also provide a considerable amount of your RDA of Vitamin K and magnesium.
How to Use Radish Leaves In Your Green Smoothies
Radish leaves aren’t sold separately from radishes, so they can be quite a bit soiled when you purchase them, even if they were grown organically. Simply make sure that you wash them thoroughly to remove dirt and debris before using them in your green smoothies. When you are choosing radishes for their leaves, look for radishes that feature bright green leaves. The leaves should not be wilted or willowing.
Additionally, look for radishes that are grown organically. Commercially grown leafy green vegetables tend to contain high amounts of pesticide residue, which could potentially be harmful to your health. In addition to using radish leaves in green smoothies, you can also use them in salads or sandwiches.
