Green Smoothies With Figs and Bananas

Green SmoothiesThese green smoothies with fig and bananas only take a few moments of your time to make, but they taste ever so exotic! This is, hands down, one of my favorite green smoothie recipes. I hadn’t had one in a while, and I had forgotten just how much I loved them. Recently, I had a friend over who asked for one, and I thought I should share the recipe with you.

Figs are one of the primary ingredients in these green smoothies. My favorite type of fig to use is the Calmyra variety, but you can use almost any type of figs. Figs are an excellent source of fiber and calcium, and organic figs can easily be found at your local health food store. You can also use them in dried form. I just personally prefer for mine to be fresh.

I like to use ripe bananas in my green smoothies, because it gives the smoothie the creamy consistency of a milkshake. Similarly, I chose to use coconut milk in these green smoothies, but if you do not like its taste, you can easily substitute yogurt or organic milk. If you do choose to use coconut milk, make sure to choose whole organic coconut, not the light version. It is an ideal source of healthy fats.

I choose to make a few last minute additions, like rosewater and the pinch of cardamom, but these are totally optional. You can leave me off if you want too. Likewise, if you want your green smoothies to have more protein, consider adding 1-2 raw egg yolks. Water soaked seeds or nuts can also be added.

To make these green smoothies, here are the ingredients you’ll need to have:

  •  3 fresh figs (or 3 dried figs, soaked overnight in water to rehydrate)
  •  1 banana, previously peeled and frozen
  •  1/2 cup organic coconut milk
  •  1 cup of purified water
  •  1 teaspoon rose water- optional
  •  dash of ground cardamom- optional

Each of these ingredients should be added to your blender one at a time and blended together until smooth. Add water to the smoothie as needed until it achieves the right consistency. This recipe will make about 2 cups of green smoothies. If you do not drink it all at once, you can package the rest of it in the fridge and save it for another day. Enjoy!
