What’s a better way to warm up during chilly autumn nights?  Cinnamon! And it’s even better when used in my Cinnamon Apple Pie Smoothie! The iconic fall flavor is a warm,  rustic and romantic flavor that will add a healthy sip of spice to your life. It is a  staple ingredient in most autumnal recipes (apple pie,  cider, and spiced pumpkin). Cinnamon is used to add a spicy sweetness to awaken the taste buds. Cultivated from the bark of wild trees, cinnamon is often included in recipes that rely on ingredients with a lot of natural sugar. Adding the hot kick of flavor, cinnamon balances a recipe’s flavor.

In championing the benefits of green smoothies, I found that I have sometimes overlooked  emphasizing the health benefits of spices. Spices naturally add more than just flavor alone, they also sprinkle in a dose of health benefits. As a natural remedy for the common cold, cinnamon is known as a dietary additive that can assist with minor health concerns, including diarrhea, low blood sugar and vomiting. For me, one of the best benefits of cinnamon is as a flavor enhancer that adds nutrients without adding sugar or unnecessary calories.

Apple pie is a seasonal culinary favorite however I do try to limit my consumption of this delectable treat. So, to celebrate the flavor, I found a green smoothie with cinnamon that captures the essence of apple pie in a natural, nutrient-rich treat. For variety, I mix up this recipe by switching out the type of apple: Pink Lady apples, Gala apples, or Green Macintosh, etc. Sometimes I want a more tart tasting smoothie, sometimes I am craving the sweetness that only a red delicious apple can satisfy. In my recipe for this Cinnamon Apple Pie Smoothie, I typically use frozen bananas to make a cold, thick consistency. However, room temperature bananas work well, too. In the fall, I sometimes add a raw pumpkin puree to add a velvety texture.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ to 2 bananas (for a thicker consistency, sliced bananas and freeze before using)
  • 1 apple
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/4 cup cashews
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of ground nutmeg

Mix the ingredients in a blender and top with a sprinkling of cinnamon on top!
